Beginning with the 1st of January 2024, paid passes (monthly, weekly, monthly valid for 5, 10 or 15 days), shall be issued only in digital format, either on a transport card, or in the form of a dynamic QR code associated to a mobile phone.

A pass is a ticket recommended for people travelling frequently in a certain period of time, with a discount of up to 50%.

It is issued only for the 2nd class and for the journey starting on any day of the month, 30 days in advance.

It allows a number of trips made by trains in traffic, during the validity period, at the established train rank or lower rank, without having to reserve the seat when travelling by trains with mandatory reservation system, except for travelling with a non-foldable bicycle in special bicycle coaches, in which case payment of seat reservation fee is mandatory.

Where can I buy a pass?

Passes can be purchased from:

  • any CFR Călători railway station of travel agency, only through xSell electronic issuing system, during their working hours:
    1. in physical format – on cardboard;
    2. in digital format – on Transport Card type;
  • ticket vending machines, only monthly and weekly passes;

Checking tickets onboard

    • Passes are nominal and non-transferable tickets
    • They are valid onboard only with the identity document (ID, passport, residence permit, driving license), in original.
    • Passes for pupils are valid onboard only with an identity document (passport, residence permit or birth certificate in original/copy for people under 14 years old), in original, if it has a photo and the Social Security Number.
    • Passes for students are valid onboard only with the original student ID card for discount/free transport, endorsed for the current academic year.
    • When checking the legality of the train journey, passes must be submitted as follows:
      1. in original – for those issued in physical format on cardboard
      2. on Transport Card type, in original – for those issued in digital format on this type of media
      3. dynamic QR code on the phone – for those issued digitally through the phone app
    • Any inconsistency shall be treated according to the regulations in force
Passengers buying monthly passes 5, 10 or 15 day and weekly passes, can also choose to load them in digital format on Transport Card, at ticket offices.
Transport Card holders can buy online monthly and weekly passes on the website www.cfrcalatori.ro or through CFR Calatori online tickets phone app.

1. Where can I obtain a Transport Card from and what are the benefits?

• Transport Card is issued for a fee, based on a request filled in by the passenger at ticket offices of CFR Călători stations and travel agencies, only for the purchase of full payment “passes”.
• For a passenger holding a Transport Card, issuance of digital passes (loading a pass on the card), as well as possible tariff differences (rank difference and/or reservation ticket) can be made at any ticket vending machine belonging to CFR Călători (Kioșk).
• For people holding a Transport Card, it is no longer necessary to fill out a request when recharging monthly and weekly passes with an unlimited number of trips. Note! 5, 10 or 15 monthly passes require filling out a request with each recharge.
• To recharge passes on the card from CFR ticket vending machines, passengers will enter both the card series and the Social Security Number, while the system checks the validity of the transport card and the correspondence of the card series – Social Security Number.
• In case of loss/theft or damage of the Transport Card, it can be replaced by paying the issuing fee. Note! When replacing the card, all digital passes still valid at that time, are automatically transferred to the new card.

3. How to refund the passes loaded on the Transport Card?

a. Partial refund (during the validity period of the pass) is made at the issuing unit, based on a request filled out by the passenger, automatically withholding fees and related rates.
b. Total refund, before the first day of validity, can be made at any unit.
c. For digital passes issued online on the website or through the phone app, the refund request is made only from the user account and the refund of the amounts to be returned is made directly to the account linked to the bank card with which the pass was purchased.

4. How is the pass checked on the train by the train staff?
• Transport cards are automatically recognized by the mobile device belonging to the train staff when scanning.
• After scanning a transport card loaded with a valid pass, the information related to the type of pass, route, validity period, as well as the identification data of the passenger will be displayed, comparing it with those on the identity document

5. What is the fee for issuing the Transport Card and what is its’ validity period?

The issuing fee is 5 RON, while the validity period is of 4 years.

  • Passes are issued at ticket offices only based on an identity document (ID/passport/residence permit/driving license) and an application filled in by passengers.
  • When purchasing digital card-based passes (called «Transport Card»), the application must be filled in only at the first request to issue the card, after which it is no longer necessary to fill in another request.
  • An exception are those monthly passes with a limited number of journeys (5, 10 or 15 journeys) for which, regardless of the media on which they are issued (classic passes on thermo-reactive cardboard type or digital passes loaded on the card), it is necessary to fill in an application where clearly specifies the days of the journey (requested validity days).
  • Passes DO NOT allow travelling by 1st class train, sleeping car and Intercity train, nor on a detour that falls within a higher mileage area.
  • Passes DO NOT allow travelling by class difference train and route difference, by any train class, nor by Intercity train class difference.
  • For the trip at 2nd class by InterRegio train with a valid Regio train pass, it is mandatory to fully pay the rank difference at the ticket office for the passes purchased on cardboard or on Transport Card. For digital passes with a QR code, the rank difference and the reservation fee can be purchased onboard.
  • If a pass’s data is requested to be changed, it will be returned and a new pass will be issued/purchased.
  • In case of lost passes that were issued in physical format – on cardboard, duplicates will not be issued, replaced or refunded.
  • In case of loss/theft of a „Transport Card” type, it will be replaced by another card, paying the selling price of a card type. When replacing a transport card type, all digital passes, still valid at that time, are automatically transferred to the new card.
  • Valid for 2nd class trip by Regio or InterRegio trains, made over a kilometer distance (km area) of up to 300 km;
  • They are tickets with unlimited number of trips during the validity period;
  • They are issued to all people travelling on the requested route, valid from any day of the month;
  • Fees are calculated with a discount granted of about 50% of the transport fee;

  • It is necessary to fill in a request clearly specifying the days when you want to travel (requested validity days);
  • They are issued for a 2nd class trip by Regio or InterRegio trains, made over a kilometer distance (km area) of up to 300 km;

Discounts granted:
Fees are calculated with a discount from the transport fee, differentiated according to the number of validity days, as follows:

  • Discount of about 45% for 15-day Monthly pass,
  • Discount of about 35% for 10-day Monthly pass,
  • Discount of about 25% for 5-day Monthly pass.

Important! 5, 10 or 15-day passes do not allow anticipation or postponement of the trip for days other than those mentioned on the ticket.

  • They are tickets with an unlimited number of trips during the validity period;
  • They are issued to all people travelling on the requested route;
  • Fees are calculated with a discount granted of about 40% of the transport fee.
