CFR Călători informs that, starting with 14th of December 2025, the new 2025-2026 timetable will come into force, which will be valid until 12th of December 2026.

The company will ensure the daily circulation of more than 1150 trains, depending on the period of the year: 52 trains in international traffic, 20 Intercity trains, 112 Interregio trains, 26 seasonal trains and 952 Regio trains, thus covering rail transport at the national level. The new train traffic plan reflects the investments made in the modernization of the rail transport service, , reflects the introduction of new rolling stock and the operation of additional trains to better meet the demand for mobility at national and international level.

News in the international rail traffic – extensive links and improved connectivity

–           Direct links between Budapest and Bucharest. Starting with the next timetable, următorul mers al trenurilor, the IR 72 and IR 73 trains will circulate on the direct Budapest Keleti – Bucharest North route, by extending the  current route that ends in Craiova. This change will ensure a direct connection with the Romanian capital, increasing the number of direct flights from the capital.

–          Return of trains to Vienna Westbahnhof. The IR 346 and IR 347 trains will circulate again to Vienna Westbahnhof (instead of  Vienna Hauptbahnhof), on a direct route, via Budapest Kelenfold (instead of Budapest Keleti). At the same time, the Baia Mare – Vienna Westbahnhof route will  continue to circulate the Someș trains no. 687/686. These measures contribute to fluidizing traffic and facilitate passengers’ access to fast and efficient international connections to various European destinations.

–           New seasonal trains on the Bucharest – Giurgiu – Ruse route. For the 2026 summer season, 4 new trains will be introduced on the Bucharest Nord – Bucharest Progresu – Giurgiu – Ruse route and return, contributing to the development of cross-border mobility and the strengthening of regional connections.

–           Continuing cooperation with Ukraine.  The partnership with the Ukrainian railway company UZ will continue in the new timetable by maintaining the group of wagons Kiev – Ungheni – Bucharest North and return, retur, the direct group of the Prietenia train no. 401/402, offering a stable and safe connection between Romania and Ukraine.

–           Reduction of the border stop limes. Considering Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, the international train stops will be reduced as a result of the elimination of document control.

News in domestic rail traffic – ongoing modernization and improved services

The 2025–2026 railway program also brings changes to domestic traffic, by introducing modern rolling stock, increasing the degree of comfort and expanding quality services for passengers:

–           Continuation of deliveries through PNRR – modernized wagons and locomotives. In the 2025–2026 timetable, CFR Călători will continue to introduce into circulation the wagons and locomotives modernized through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), as they are delivered by specialized factories in Romania. The new wagons are equipped with modern facilities designed to improve the travel experience: Wi-Fi internet, audio-video information systems, surveillance cameras, electrical plugs, air conditioning, ecological toilets, as well as specially designed spaces for people with reduced mobility and even equipped with bar-bistro wagons. Considering the increase in the quality of services offered in the new timetable, through which passengers will benefit from a higher level of comfort, speed and safety, some Interregio trains that connect Bucharest and Mărășești – Suceava/Iași, as well as Brașov will be reclassified as Intercity trains, using in their formation rolling stock modernized through PNRR.

–           Introduction the new Alstom Coradia Stream electric multiple units. An important step in increasing the quality of railway services in domestic traffic is the introduction into circulation of trains consisting of the new modern Alstom Coradia Stream electric multiple units, made available by the Railway Reform Authority (ARF). These electric mulitple units, part of a batch of 12 units purchased from European funds and awarded by CFR Călători following a competitive tender, comply with current European standards and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. For the new timetable, CFR Călători scheduled to use these modern electric multiple units in the formation of 26 trains with daily circulation, distributed on the most requested routes: 14 traind between Bucharest North and Constanța and return, 6 trains between Bucharest North and Craiova and return, 2 trains on the Bucharest North – Craiova – Deva route and return, 2 trains between Bucharest North and Arad and return, and other 2 trains on the Bucharest North – Brașov and Bucharest North – Timișoara North route and return. Introducing into circulation of the Alstom Coradia Stream electric multiple units will take place in accordance with their delivery. We estimate that by February the 1st, 2026, 11 EMUs from the first batch of 12 will be in circulation.

–           Introduction of the PESA EMUs on the Bucharest – Buzău – Adjud route. CFR Călători planned during the year 2026 to put 7 trains into circulation formate from PESA EMUs, currently in the process of testing and reception, on the Bucharest – Buzău – Adjud route and return. These EMUs are purchased by the  Railway Reform Authority (ARF) and will be put into service after completion of all techical and  administrative procedures, as well as their effective handover to CFR Călători.

–           Continuous modernization of the railway fleet. The rolling stock used in the new Timetable includes, in addition to the new Alstom units, PESA and the rolling stock modernized through PNRR funds, also the modernized wagons in   recent years from own funds, compliant with European standards, as well as older rolling stock, which is in a gradual replacement process. As the new Alstom EMUs, the PESA  EMUs and the rolling stock units modernized through PNRR funds will enter into circulation, these will gradually replace older wagons. This process represents an important stage in the modernization of the railway fleet and in increasing the level of comfort and safety offered to CFR Călători passengers.
